GEORGE FORD MORRIS BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

American born 1873 Joseph, Missouri died in 1960 Arcadia, California. George Ford Morris was the foremost American equestrian artist of his time. He documented the fast changing world of the horse in American history in the early to mid 20th century. He was equally talented as a painter, sculptor, illustrator & lithographer. He was mainly self taught but attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1888 & later at the Academie Julien in Paris 1925. In the early twentieth century, Morris worked mainly from his Thirty-third Street studio in New York City.

Concentrating almost solely upon the art of the horse, George Ford Morris was a frequent contributing artist to such publications as 'The American Horseman', 'Breeder's Gazette', 'American Field', 'National Horseman' & 'Thoroughbred of California'. He also illustrated for national publications such as 'Scribner's' & 'Century' magazines. Horse Study was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York in 1945. The Associated American Artists was created in the mid 1930s & commissioned original graphic art from such great American masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh & many others. Besides Horse Study, Morris published at least two other original lithographs with the A.A.A. during the 1940s decade. All A.A.A. works of art were published in editions ranging from 125 to 250 signed impressions.

In 1952 Morris published 'Portraitures of Horses' considered The Horse Book of the Century. An amazing collection of his portraitures & sketches spanning over 40 years of his work. Needless to say these books have become high collectibles in the horse world. The pages are full of images of top Saddlebreds, Arabians, Show Hacks, GFM's own horses, pet dogs & more, creating a chronicle album of Town & Country Americana.

George Ford Morris is most remembered for his portraiture of the American Saddlebred. His documentation of the rise of this breed with its foundation stock is quite remarkable. George Ford Morris' work remains the most sought after still in the 21st century.

FIRENZE AKA FIRENZI BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Firenze 1884–1902, also recorded as "Firenzi,", was an American Thoroughbred Champion & Hall of Fame filly racehorse. The New York Times called Firenze: "...one of the greatest distaffers of the 19th Century." Foaled at Elmendorf Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, Firenze was sold by owner/breeder Daniel Swigert to lawyer & businessman James Ben Ali Haggin. Under trainer Matt Byrnes, Firenze became the second filly in American Thoroughbred racing history to earn more than $100,000 in purse money & was voted the retrospective American Champion Older Female Horse for four straight years.

Although a small horse at just 15 hands, Firenze was noted for her stamina. She competed in up to twenty or more races a year & frequently at distances of 1 to 2 miles. However, what makes her performances so remarkable is that she repeatedly defeated the top colts of the day including the Dwyer Brothers Stable's two future Hall of Fame colts, Hanover & Kingston. As well, in the 1888 season, she was the only horse to beat A. J. Cassatt's Preakness Stakes winner & son of the great Longfellow, The Bard.

Firenze won the mile & a half Freehold Stakes three straight years between 1888 & 1890. Run at the Long Branch Racetrack in New Jersey, Firenze was so feared that in the 1889 no owner would enter their horse against her & she won in a walkover. At her retirement Firenze had achieved the second highest earnings for a filly in American history. Miss Woodford won more & Yo Tambien won a bit less.

Firenze began racing at age two & competed through age seven, retiring to her owner's Rancho Del Paso stud farm near Sacramento California. As a broodmare her own progeny, including those sired by her Hall of Fame stablemate Salvator achieved only modest success in racing but several of her fillies were successful as broodmares. Firenze died in 1902 at Rancho Del Paso. In 1981, she was inducted into the National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame.

ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR RARE ORIGINAL ONE OF A KIND ART

On Trend with REGARD Magazine .... Ask our Stylist

The Holidays are upon us and we have received hundreds of questions about what to wear for different occasions this season. Tweet or Facebook us your questions, and it just might be turned into our next blog!

Dear REGARD Stylist,
I waited until the last minute and have a ton of shopping to do for my family and friends. I need to be comfortable for all the running around I will be doing, but I also want to look cute. What is the best way to be in style but still retain comfort for my outing to the mall that promises long hours?   Nicole, Los Angeles, Ca

Dear Nicole,
Your fashion dilemma has an easy fix. Follow along with me and let’s put your outfit together:

Start with your favorite pair of jeans. The wide leg roomy ones are perfect because they won’t be too tight even after hours of shopping.

On top of your jeans, your favorite t-shirt is a great choice. Logo or not, it’s most likely soft and worn in from the many times you have washed it.

Then add your best flats; the ones that are already broken in, and are comfortable enough to walk in all day.

Use these easy basics as your foundation.

Layering is the best thing you can do for long shopping trips. The hustle and bustle of the season ensures lots of people in your same situation hitting the mall.

A word of wisdom, don’t take your coat or heavy jacket into the mall or store. It will only weigh you down as your shopping excursion goes on. Lots of people + lots of movement = plenty of body heat.

Thin layers do best, as they are easy to remove if necessary.

A thin sweater over you t-shirt and a scarf will add color, texture, and depth to an otherwise very basic outfit.

Finally, a few light accessories will complete the look. Please note that unnecessary jewelry can be a nuisance during your shopping trip.

A watch is a practical addition to this outfit, as it will allow you keep track of the time as you venture out and do you holiday shopping. A stylish version will also be decorative, as opposed to bracelets.

A small purse with a long strap will be a great asset. Wearing it cross body style will allow for hands-free shopping and easy access to your purchases.

There you have it, a comfy, yet chic look that is definitely worthy of any long shopping trip. Hope this helps!

My Cushion that I made

I had the most awful migraine yesterday, but it seems to have brought on a spurt of creativity.  I printed the small tags for this cushion a few weeks ago but just got round to finishing it this morning after my frosty (rather cold I might add) run, I stopped to capture a few frosty pictures too......everywhere is so very beautiful today and icy fingers snapped at my cheeks when I was out......
See you soon .. give away at the weekend xxx

On Trend with REGARD Magazine .... Giving Thanks

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and for most American’s, this means a day full of great friends and family. In response to all the questions we received about what to wear for the auspicious, food filled day, we have put together 2 fool proof outfits that should help to alleviate the stress of dressing.

For a comfortable and casual turkey pig out, start with a pair of thick knit leggings. The elastic waist will be your greatest ally after dinner and right before dessert. A long, loose fitting, embellished t-shirt will be an easy pick. It covers your bum, and will be a relaxed fit over a full tummy.  Follow that with a pair of super tall flat boots and a cozy, but tailored long cardigan.

Finally, a few colorful accessories like a big hobo bag and long earrings solidify your look as chic, with a comfort food focus.

In case your holiday celebration isn’t so relaxed and calls for more stylish attire, don’t worry. You don’t have to give up comfort for style. You may, however have to give up that third serving of candied yams.

Begin with a great pair of palazzo style jeans. The tie at the top is great for any waistline adjustment that needs to be made throughout the day. A jersey knit turtle neck is stretch -tastic and will be a comfy alternative to anything buttoned up. The exaggerated neck and shoulder give a basic turtleneck some flair. And the cabernet colored shoes and bag add elegance to an otherwise simple but chic ensemble.

Whatever style best fits your holiday festivities, Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at REGARD Magazine, and remember to be grateful for life itself, if nothing else. Enjoy!

On Trend with Regard Magazine .... Winter White

Winter White?
Should white be worn after Labor Day?  This age old question that has perplexed west coasters for years, and sends east coaster into a tizzy. We love winter for white and have a few ideas on how you can inject some white into your wardrobe:
  • Try wearing your whites in heavier fabrics that lend to the colder weather. Instead of a chiffon dress try a heavy lace brocade with a black underlay. The heavy black shoes, black tights and black leather, give the ladylike lace some weight and a hard edge.
  • All white is gorgeous against the grey backdrop of winter. Try wearing all white, and adding some sparkle and a bright shoe for a night out. The suede of the platform is heavy enough to anchor all the white.
  • Typically “winter whites” are more cream and ecru than true white. Be sure that if you are wearing whites, they are in the same tone family. This simply means no creamy whites with pure whites.
  • If all white is too much, try wearing cream tones with khaki and cognac, and off white with grey and silver.
However you decide to incorporate white, have fun and be adventurous. Rules are meant to be broken!

On Trend with Regard Magazine ....The Royal Blues

Prince William is engaged, and the world over is buzzing with the news. This plays royally into our fashion hands. With the holidays coming soon, as well as the approach of award show season, our inspiration was this royal blue gown worn to the MET Costume Ball, earlier this year.

This season, the hues of the electric cerulean sort are all the rage. The color formula seems to be bright teal + navy = Royal Blue. It’s bright enough to stand out from the winter grays, deep enough to retain a sophisticated edge and exalted enough to be deemed royal.

Presented are a few items that may help you incorporate this vivid, yet subdued shade into your wardrobe, and give your fall to winter wardrobe life. It’s electric! And remember, even Elvis had blue suede shoes. Enjoy!

On Trend with Regard Magazine....Looks for Less: Coats

There are so many amazing and fabulous coats out there for the coming season. However, cold weather outer wear is often drab, and comes in colors worthy of the winter conditions: grey or black.

Instead, we love the idea of bright and interesting coats that will help to brighten up those ugly rainy days, as well as add more visual relevance to any outfit. Here are some chic alternatives that come without the trendy price tag, all under $300.

So, before Jack Frost nips at your nose, and your desperation for a winter coat leads you to yet another boring, grey or black option, venture out now, and find a coat with some personality, to compliment your personality. Have Fun!
