That Darn Anna...

Recently the members of the CFDA met to discuss options for the fashion industry to overcome the recession. A lot people suggested plenty of ideas from smaller production quantities to quicker fashion week/retail turn-around. But listen to what Ms. Anna had to say according to Jezebel.com...

"But Anna Wintour's proposed solution really takes the cake. The Vogue editor stood up to offer, "Could someone lead a committee that would make ground rules for retailers of when the discounting starts, and then all the retailers can agree to it?" Von Furstenberg interjected that that was illegal — in fact, if the big department stores had any such agreement, it would amount to price-fixing and collusion, an anti-trust lawsuit in the making. "Is that something we can change?" asked Wintour. "We have friends in the White House now!"

The Newest Additions

Yesterday morning, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (abbreviated, CFDA) revealed its newest members. Among the new members were twin fashion moguls Mary Kate Olsen, and Ashley Olsen.

The CFDA is basically, the only governing body for the style industry in the US so to become a member is sort of a HUGE deal. The membership includes a membership form akin to a college application, plus recommendations from other industry professionals and a voting process to accept or deny your presence. Mary Kate and Ashley won acceptance for their two clothing lines, The Row and Elizabeth & James, which are sold at big boutiques around the world. I think some form of congratulations is in order. Let's hope it doesn't involve an illegal substance with these two.

Something Isn't Right - But Who Said It's Wrong?

Being over the CFDA, Diane von Furstenberg’s had very few direct orders for her team - except one for creative director Trey Laird. She wanted to “capture fashion — do something fabulous.”

So Laird thought hard and came up with a pretty dope angle. Instead of using models to display the designers’ work, he figured it would be in the creative outlook's best interest to have the nominees shot wearing their very own creations - something that had not been done before. Laird along with photographer Craig McDean and stylist Karl Templer helped to make sure the journal shots went smoothly. Check out a few of em.

Francisco Costa Takes the Big One

Without a doubt, women's wear rules the fashion industry. So obviously it is the highest honor to be named the women's wear designer of the year, which was awarded to Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein. I use to work as a sales rep for Calvin Klein and ever since then I've been very fond of the cleanness and classic silhouettes of CK. Calvin Klein has always had a strong celebrity following and Eva Mendes was over joyed to announce Costa as the winner of this years biggest award. Costa told FashionWeekDaily.com:

"Every designer wants to be affiliated with the CFDA. I think the industry benefits from the CFDA because the CFDA backs up the industry. It’s a community effort. It’s not about me benefiting from it; it’s the CFDA recognizing their members…who the people are, out there. I don’t think it’s a personal thing."

It's nice to see a fashion house that is so all American continue to strive and create great things, and employ great talent to ensure it's longevity. Bravo to Costa and Calvin, and Liv Lux wishes you all the best in the future!
