Dear REGARD stylist,
I want to add some new items to my wardrobe. What are the 5 most important trends I can easily add to my closet for fall this year?

Miss Amina,
Your question really got me thinking about the hottest trends of the season. However, a lot of the trends for the fall to winter season are a bit too trendy and may not seamlessly merge into your closet. So here are my top 5 picks:
-Faux fur is really in this fall, but the styles can get really outrageous and over the top. Simplify this trend and try it in a vest style over a long sleeve tee and jeans. You will find countless ways to wear this piece, so give it a shot.
-Velvet is a great fabric for the fall/winter months. The weight of the fabric is too heavy for spring or summer, and is traditionally worn for the holidays. Look for fresh and modern ways to wear velvet, and work it. Your velvets should be heavy in weight and made of silk blends with touches of spandex or lycra. Velveteens made of polyester will not look soft, will ware down, and can look cheap. Beware!
-Give any tee shirt and jeans a rock and roll edge with a pair of DocMartin-esq boots. This trend is smoking hot, this season and also practical in the cold and rain with tall wool socks. They are a great alternative to ugly rain gollashes, and they still look cool after they have been worn and broken in. This 80’s staple has made a combat comeback, and I think this trend will be around for a while, so the pair you purchase should be a bit of an investment. Leather is your best bet to weather the elements for seasons to come.
-Leopard print is ALWAYS classic. This season, try doing leopard in a fun color, like this teal leopard print cardigan. Also, try a new and different animal print. Zebra has been very popular this year. Whatever print you like best, treat it like a neutral. This means they can be worn with pretty much everything. Experiment, and have fun with this one.
-Sequins for daytime is a new trend, and I’m on the bandwagon. The trick is to wear the sequins strategically. Too much glitter while the sun is up, and you chance looking like a club-hopping teenager, that forgot to bring a change of clothes for the next day… Enough said. For day, a little sparkle goes a long way. It’s a wildly more chic way to show your holiday cheer, than a sweater with Christmas trees or snowflake sparkle.
These are, in my opinion, the top 5 must haves for any solid casual fall wardrobe. Look for pieces that are simple and basic, but in a new, and inventive colors. Play with pattern and shape and have fun!!
