On Trend with REGARD Magazine ....Ask our Stylist.....Satchel Bags

Dear Regard Stylist,
I am a graduate school student, but I despise backpacks. I refuse to wear one, but I desperately need a chic bag that I can carry at least one book in, but that can also double as a cute purse. Help?
Jana E., Burbank, CA

Dear Jana,
Your style dilemma can easily be solved. The type of bag you need is a satchel. Satchels are generally identifiable by a single fold over flap with a clasp or buckle, and typically have a utilitarian handle or two on top. It’s an ideal construction cross between a backpack and a briefcase. Many of these also have a cross-body strap for convenient conversion from more of a purse, to a carry all. Here are some of my favorites, along with a few tips to abide by when looking for your perfect fit.

Construction quality is KEY. Your satchel should be well made, especially if you plan on carrying your books in it for more than one school year.

Look for solid-feeling and perfectly functioning hardware. All clasps should clasp easily and all buckles should buckle correctly. Also, secure, and even stitching and piping is a must.

The inside lining should be even and spotless (especially when looking at vintage bags.)  No holes, or runs for change or pens to slip through and further damage your bag.

A good bag should last years, so do your best and take care of it, inside and out. Repair, if necessary, and don’t use your bag if it is in need of repair.

Finally, pick the right bag for your purpose. Found a cute option?  Great!  But does it meet all of your needs?  Be sure it does!

 ....Hope this helps!!
